Chrysotile containing products in a household
In reality vast majority of asbestos containing products in Thailand are high density chrysotile cement roofing sheets, shingles and siding that used outside of home. There is no evidence that people living under chrysotile cement roof have been specifically affected in any manner. These products are not likely to release chrysotile fibres unless sawed, drilled, or cut.
Fiber concentration above chrysotile cement roofing sheets generally is the same like in general ambient environment. At these low levels, the risk isundetectably low, indeed much lower than other risks, such as natural background radiation. Such a low risk has been labelled: “acceptable” by the WHO, or “not significant”, by the Ontario Royal Commission on Asbestos or “further control not justified”, by the Royal Society, London.
It is usually NOT a serious problem when chrysotile cement products are used in your household. The mere presence of these products in a home or a building is not hazardous. Even in a damaged state, these products present insignificant risk because it is impossible to release a considerable amount of fibers that poses health risks.
Consumer safe use guidelines
It is best to leave materials containing chrysotile alone. However, there are simple and easy rules that will help avoid dust generation when working with these products.
DOs
• Wet the material thoroughly before remove, cut or drill
• Use protective mask and gears when working
• Seal removed parts and debris in plastic garbage bags
• After finish working with the material, thoroughly clean working area with wet mops or sponges at least twice. Rinse mops and sponges under running water in a sink or basin with a drain
DON’Ts
• Do not use high speed tools for cutting and drilling. Use only handsaw tool instead
• Do not use a vacuum cleaner to pick up dust. Small fibres and particles might pass through normal filters and become airborne
